Explaining Neural Transitions through Resource Constraints

چکیده

Abstract One challenge in explaining neural evolution is the formal equivalence of different computational architectures. If a simple architecture suffices, why should more complex architectures evolve? The answer must involve intense competition for resources under which brains operate. I show how recurrent networks can be favored when increased complexity allows efficient use existing resources. Although resource constraints alone drive change, recurrence shifts landscape what later evolvable. Hence organisms on either side transition boundary may have similar cognitive capacities but very potential evolving new capacities.

Explaining Producer/Consumer Constraints

Resource-constrained project scheduling problems are one of the most studied scheduling problem, and constraint programming with nogood learning provides the state-of-the-art solving technology for them, at least when the aim is minimizing makespan. In this paper we examine the closely related problem of scheduling producers and consumers of discrete resources and reservoirs. Producer/consumer ...

Explaining consumer choice through neural networks: The stacked generalization approach

This paper uses neural network models and the ensemble technique of stacked generalization to investigate the relative importance of situational and demographic factors on consumer choice. We discuss the theoretical justification for this approach and develop the level-0 and level-1 models which we estimate using a consumer choice data set from AT&T. The findings confirm the superiority of situ...

Critical role for resource constraints in neural models

Criticality has emerged as a leading dynamical candidate for healthy and pathological neuronal activity. At the heart of criticality in neural systems is the need for parameters to be tuned to specific values or for the existence of self-organizing mechanisms. Existing models lack precise physiological descriptions for how the brain maintains its tuning near a critical point. In this paper we a...

Explaining Simulations Through Self Explaining Agents

Several strategies are used to explain emergent interaction patterns in agent-based simulations. A distinction can be made between simulations in which the agents just behave in a reactive way, and simulations involving agents with also pro-active (goal-directed) behavior. Pro-active behavior is more variable and harder to predict than reactive behavior, and therefore it might be harder to expl...

Constraints to achieving the MDGs through domestic resource mobilization

Th e present paper focuses on the role of domestic resource mobilization for fi nancing poverty reduction strategies. Policy makers should be aware of important macroeconomic trade-off s associated with MDG strategies fi nanced from tax increases or domestic borrowing. Th e trade-off s are largely intertemporal: can poor and middle-income countries absorb the initial fi nancing costs in order t...
